Aetherra › Getting started
Getting started
Seven steps between the beach where you wake up and the first time you walk into a dungeon with a party.
The first seven steps
Create your character
A name, a password, and you wake up on the Isle of Beginnings. There is no class to pick: it comes from what you do.
Do Master Aldren's tutorial
Five stages, each with an arrow on screen: the three orbs, wood and fire, fish, ore and anvil, and the first fight. The door of the island only opens at the end.
Reach Valoria and use the bank
What is in the bank is not lost on death. Store what you will not use before you walk out through the gate.
Pick a skill to pay the bills
Logs, fish and ore always sell. The General Store buys anything for 70% of its value; the Grand Market pays whatever another player is willing to pay.
Do the quests
There are 20, and each one opens a part of the game the tutorial did not teach — from the bow to Aura.
Only then cross the river
The Ashen Lands have open PvP. Bring what you are willing to lose, and no more than that.
Gather a party for Grumak's Lair
Combat level 60, gate on the Brick Plateau. The ogre king wakes on every full hour: clear his spawn before hitting him, and get off the red mark when he raises his fist.
Frequently asked questions
Is Aetherra free?
Yes. The game runs in the browser, with nothing to install and nothing to pay to get in. Just create a character with a name and a password.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Aetherra opens straight in the browser, on desktop or mobile. The world loads in a few seconds the first time.
What is full loot?
In the most dangerous zones, whoever dies loses everything they were carrying — and the killer can take it. In safe zones nothing is lost; on the frontier you keep 3 items; in danger zones, 1; on the Abyss Isles, none.
Can I play without PvP?
You can. Valoria, Eldor Forest, the Naru Coast, the Korvan Mines and the Sahr Desert are safe zones, with plenty of monsters and skills to train. PvP only exists for those who cross into the risk zones — which is where the best resources are.
Are there classes?
No. Every character can train all 15 skills. What defines your role is what you wear and wield: sword and plate, bow and leather, or staff and cloth.
Which languages is the game in?
Portuguese, English and Spanish. The language is detected from your browser and can be changed in the Options tab.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The interface becomes two drawers — chat and backpack — and the world takes up the whole screen.
Is there group content?
Yes. Grumak's Lair is a group dungeon for combat level 60 and up, with its gate on the Brick Plateau. Grumak the Ogre King wakes on every full hour of the clock, summons spawn in three phases and takes no damage while any of them is alive; his area slam shows on the ground before it lands. Loot is personal for everyone who took part — he is where the Dark Bow, Grumak's Bow, the Phoenix Bow and the Dragonbane Crossbow come from.
Can an archer kill a dragon?
They can. Crossbows are one-handed and take the anti-dragon shield, and the two hunting crossbows — the Hunter's and the Dragonbane — hit 20% and 35% harder on dragons. The first is a quest reward in Sahr.
Can I voice chat with my party?
You can, without leaving the game. A party of up to four has a call with voice, text chat and the game screen of one person at a time. The connection is direct between the players, which is why only accepted friends or guildmates of everyone already in it can join.
How does trading work?
There is a Grand Market with buy and sell offers between players, always anonymous, and direct trade between two characters with a confirmation screen. The bank stores everything, and nothing in it is lost when you die.
Start with nothing. End up owning a route nobody else dares to cross.
